There’s No Magic Wand, But …
A number of ingredients in over-the-counter treatments may help your skin appear more youthful, but it’ll take time. You may see improvement within a few months, but you shouldn’t expect to look like you’ve stepped out of a time machine. What works best for you will depend on your skin and the results you’re trying to achieve.
For Wrinkles: Retinol, Vitamin C
If you have fine lines, retinoids (which come from vitamin A) like retinol may make your skin smoother by helping it produce more collagen. It’s easier on your skin than the prescription-strength version, tretinoin (Retin-A), which can dry your skin. Products with vitamin C may help reduce fine lines and minimize sun damage, potentially keeping wrinkles at bay.
For Sagging Skin: Peptides, Ceramides
Treatments with topical growth factors or peptides could help firm sagging skin. Peptides are groups of amino acids that help make proteins, including collagen, which is the main protein found in your skin. Daily moisturizers with ceramides (fats found in the layers of your skin that you lose as you age) are a great, affordable option.
For Age Spots: Hydroquinone, Retinoids, Vitamin C, Kojic Acid

Hydroquinone, an over-the-counter drug that can bleach your skin, may fade dark spots. Retinoids can even out your skin tone. One study found that vitamin C helps fade age spots when used for 12 weeks. Kojic acid, often used as a skin-whitening ingredient, can also help reduce dark spots. Always wear sunscreen when using these ingredients, as exposure to sunlight can cause your dark spots to return.
For Uneven Skin Tone: AHAs, Retinoids
Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) help remove dead skin cells, revealing fresher skin with a more even tone. Retinoids can do the same thing. Both ingredients may irritate sensitive or dry skin, so use them cautiously if your skin is prone to irritation.
For Dull Skin: AHAs, Retinoids
If you smoke or if your skin is dry, it’s more likely to appear dull. A moisturizer can help make it look fuller and firmer. AHAs and retinoids (like retinol) can brighten your skin by promoting the removal of dead skin cells.
Which Strength Do I Need?
The strength of these ingredients will vary depending on your skin’s sensitivity. Start with lower-strength products and gradually increase the concentration as your skin adapts. Always monitor your skin’s response to avoid irritation.
