Skincare has become a hot topic on TikTok, with endless lotions, potions, and rollers promising glowing skin. I didn’t initially understand the hype, but I knew skincare had many health benefits. While the complex 12-step routines overwhelm me, I’ve simplified it into a routine I can manage, even on my busiest college days.

Here’s my simple skincare routine—featuring affordable products from Target and CVS—that can inspire you if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the skincare world.

Start with Sunscreen!

I can’t stress enough how important sunscreen is! As a child, I only used it for the beach or hikes. But once I started college, I made it a daily habit to apply sunscreen to my face before makeup. It’s now a non-negotiable step for me. Sunscreen protects against skin cancer and prevents sun damage.

Tip: Don’t forget your neck! The skin there is just as vulnerable as your face. And use any excess sunscreen on your hands for added benefit.

Here are a few ways to include sunscreen in your routine:

Regular Sunscreen: If you want something simple, any sunscreen will work. I use Native’s face sunscreen, which is thicker but offers great protection. You can find it at Target.

Tinted Moisturizer + Sunscreen: If you wear makeup, combine sunscreen with a tinted moisturizer. It gives you SPF protection (25 or 30) along with a base layer for your makeup. I love the Smashbox tinted moisturizer with hyaluronic acid. There are many affordable options at different price points.

Moisturizer + Sunscreen: If makeup isn’t your thing, use a moisturizer with built-in sunscreen. It’s light and absorbs easily. I used CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion, which contains SPF 30. It’s perfect for my routine and costs just $14 at Target.

Cleanse with a Face Wash

Face washing at the end of a long day can feel like a hassle, but it’s essential. Wipes can be convenient, but I prefer a more eco-friendly and cost-effective option. Micellar water is my go-to. It’s gentle on sensitive skin and works wonders as a makeup remover.

I use a cotton round to wipe off makeup, and though you don’t need to rinse it off, I prefer using a washcloth to remove any excess.

For sustainability, I switched to reusable cotton rounds. I bought a 15-pack at Target, and they’re easy to wash in a mesh bag. I never run out, which helps save money.

Fun Additions to Enhance Your Routine

  • StarFace Acne Patches: Acne can be a pain, but StarFace patches make it more bearable. I don’t struggle with acne too much, but I do get the occasional pimple. These patches reduce pain and size quickly, plus they add a fun, gold star to your face!
  • Loops Face Masks: Loops masks were a holiday gift from my grandma, and they live up to the hype. They are pricier, but they’re worth it as a self-care treat. These gel masks feel cooling on the skin and hold the serum in place better than other masks I’ve tried. They’re perfect for a weekly skin boost.
